Week 8's lesson is really more about Steve Mitchell's interpretation of Nita Engel's notion of having the watercolor paint itself. His YouTube Channel is 'The Mind of Watercolor'. When he first started doing these kinds of paintings he used several terms to describe his painting that seem to paint themselves: Impromptu, Accidental, Automatic and Spontaneous. He seemed to settle on 'Spontaneous'. Remember: Embrace Failure!!!

One of America’s foremost watercolor artists, Nita Engle’s landscape paintings take the viewer into the scene itself. Nita’s work is inspired from all parts of the world: from Europe and Asia to her home on the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula; from the Dessert plains of Africa to the frozen tundra of Alaska, her paintings bring the world alive. Most of her watercolor techniques have been developed and refined through years of experimentation. Nita says, “The exciting thing about painting in watercolor is that it moves on the paper, unlike oil.”

Nita Engle passed away on August 29, 2019 at the age of 93 years old.

Growing up in Shanghai, Feng began painting at age seven and never stopped, experimenting with different mediums before choosing his favorite, watercolor. “With watercolor you cannot cover your mistakes, so you must know what you are doing,” he says. He finds inspiration for his lovely landscapes in the countryside of the New River Valley: “Usually I go around - to the river, the forest, the lake – to try and find interesting compositions.”

Before coming to the U.S. in 1986, Feng received his BFA degree from Shanghai Teacher’s University and taught in its art department for four years. He completed the MFA degree at Radford University in 1989 where he is currently a Professor of Art. In his homeland of China, Feng exhibited his portraits, landscapes, and illustrations in juried exhibitions. Since coming to the U.S., his work has received acclaim throughout the country, garnering more than 300 state, regional, national, and international awards with many “Best in Show” awards and Gold Medal honors in major U.S. watercolor competitions.

This week I experimented with revisiting negative painting with a fine mist spray bottle in our treatment of florals. For many of you the experiment succeeded and you blossomed. For those who struggled, you may want to try the first (easiest) tutorial. For everyone else, take a look at all 3 and see which ones you would like to attempt. These first 3 are by Rick Surowicz (Easiest first, getting progressively more difficult:

For those who struggled with this idea of "Negative Painting", of painting around what it is you want stand out, there is this straight forward tutorial by Michael Salmon. No Spray bottle, monochromatic, simple shapes, fun results:

For those who found the fine mist spray a little too frustrating, you might want to take a look at another Rick Surowicz tutorial where he approaches the floral subject more traditionally, minimal use of fine mist spray. He also uses masking fluid -- something several of students expressed an interest in learning how to use.

A few weeks ago, I had mentioned an artist who used two brushes in one hand, one brush with paint, the other with water. I remember now even demonstrating that technique for a few minutes. The artist's name is Hedwig Theeuwen and she does very beautiful work. Here are a few of her demonstrations (she doesn't narrate what she does, but you can learn a lot from watching and following along). Also, feel free to use the two brushes one at a time. Listed from easy to progressively more difficult:
